What Is NYLT?

National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for Scout BSA Troop and Venture Crew youth leaders. It is the next step in the BSA training continuum after Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops/Crews (ILST/ILSC). NYLT teaches Scouts more about leadership through training sessions, group activities, and personal challenges in a fun and energized environment. Scouts will learn to apply leadership skills in real-world situations to help their patrols achieve success.

The requirements below have been established by the National Training Committee to allow all Scouts the opportunity to derive the most benefit from this course. Scouts must:

  1. Complete their home Unit’s Introduction to Leadership Skills course*
  2. Receive approval from your Scoutmaster or Unit leader
  3. Be at least 13 years of age by course start date
  4. Earn First Class rank, if registered in a Troop
  5. Have current BSA Health Form (Parts A, B, and C)
  6. Be comfortable camping and cooking outdoors
  7. Commit to attending the entire six-day course

* Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST), Crews (ILSC), and Ships (ILSS) should be offered through a Scout’s home unit. Ask your Unit Leader how you can participate in this course.
